Ziegler Cruises Into CGA Match Play Quarterfinals

AURORA — Defending champion Steve Ziegler of The Ranch Country Club scored two easy victories Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship at CommonGround Golf Course.

Ziegler defeated Kory Harrell of Eisenhower Golf Club 5 and 4 in the round of 32, then ousted David Delich of the Broadmoor Golf Club 5 and 3 in the round of 16. A quarterfinalist in the U.S. Amateur last year, Ziegler was 8 under par in Wednesday’s two rounds.
Ziegler, aiming to become the first back-to-back Match Play champion since Brett Dean in 1990-91, will face Taylor Stamp of the Broadmoor in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Stamp, who won his first two matches in extra holes, prevailed 3 and 2 over Jordan Burgess of Highland Hills Golf Course in the round of 16.

The other quarterfinalists are Klinton Krieger of Ptarmigan Country Club, Danny Hahn of CommonGround, Gunner Wiebe of Cherry Hills Country Club, Alex Gutesha of Meridian Golf Club, Jim Knous of the Golf Club at Ironbridge, and Martin Prazak of Colorado Golf Club. Wiebe, son of Champions Tour regular Mark Wiebe, needed 20 holes to defeat Justin Spray of the Country Club of Colorado in the round of 16. Gutesha, meanwhile, closed out his Wednesday afternoon match by holing out from 188 yards for eagle on the par-4 15th hole in a 4 and 3 victory over Lanny Cameron of Mariana Butte Golf Course.
The No. 1-seeded Ziegler, who swept the CGA Match Play and Stroke Play titles in 2009, is the only top-10 seed to advance to the quarterfinals.

Both the quarterfinals and the semifinals will be played Thursday, with the 36-hole final scheduled for Friday beginning at 7 a.m.
