Wire Reports
Denver, CO: Doug Rohrbaugh of Carbondale, CO shot a 5-over par 77 in the final round but had more than enough room to win the 14th annual HealthONE Colorado Senior Open by six strokes at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Another day of constant wind saw scores well above average with only one player breaking par on the 6,896 yard, par 72 championship course. Rohrbaugh’s wire-to-wire victory is the first since Dave Arbuckle won the 2007 championship.
Rohrbaugh started the day four shots up on four-time Champions Tour winner R.W. Eaks. But for the second consecutive year, the Colorado Springs native withdrew, despite being in the top five on the leaderboard after nine holes during the final round. Last year Eaks, who had won the 2011 event, stopped playing because, he said, he pulled a groin. This year, he just quit.
“I'm just done,” he told a tournament official. He wasn't hurt, he said. “I'm just mentally ill.”
Barry Conser of Scottsdale, AZ fired an even par 72 to move up 12 spots into solo second place and took home $5,000 for his efforts. Ron Schroeder of Montgomery, TX moved up 17 spots after posting the only sub-par round (71) of the day to finish in a tie for third place with Ron Vlosich of Lakewood, CO, Javier Sanchez of Fayetteville, GA, and Timothy Matthews of Scotts, MI.
Low amateur honors went to University of Denver men’s golf coach Eric Hoos after winning a sudden-death playoff against Sean Forey of Morrison, CO. Both players finished tied for 28th at 18-over par 234 and went to the par-4 10th where Hoos won with a par on the first playoff hole against Forey’s bogie. This is Hoos’s second low amateur win after his first came in 2011. Forey is also a two-time low amateur champion with wins in 2008 and 2010.
Super Senior (players over 60 years of age) honors went to 5-time PGA Tour winner Danny Edwards of Scottsdale, AZ who used his 22nd career hole-in-one, this one coming on the par-3 13th, to finish alone in 17th place at 229 (13-over).
Another player, Paul Lobato of Denver, CO, celebrated his 6th hole-in-one of his career by acing the par-3 5th with an 8-iron from 184 yards. Lobato finished in a tie for 11th place at 226 (10-over).
