After Three Rounds, Past Champs Share Lead at Colorado Open

Champions Davis (’14) and Brown (’13) sit at 14-under, with logjam right behind them

Denver, CO: Sunday’s final round should prove to be a shoot-out with 2014 champion Ian Davis of Edmond, OK and 2013 champ Zahkai Brown of Arvada, CO tied at 14-under after three rounds of the 51st HealthONE Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Nine players are within five strokes of the leaders including three other past champions (Nathan Lashley (2010) of Scottsdale, AZ, Derek Tolan (2009, 2012) of Highlands Ranch, CO and Wil Collins (2005) of Rapid City, SD).

This is the second year in a row reigning champ Ian Davis is leading after three rounds. Nearly as impressive is the fact that this is the third time in the past four years that Brown is in the final group of the final round. Brown, a Colorado State alum, has a win in 2013 and a second place finish in 2012 to show for it.

Jimmy Gunn of Dornoch, Scotland stands in third place (-12, 204) after posting seven birdies and a bogey on his way to tying the low round of the day (6-under 66). Gunn finished in a tie for 27th at last month’s US Open at Chambers Bay and his caddie this week is Steve “Pepsi” Hale who is Keegan Bradley’s regular caddie on the PGA Tour.

Lashley and Kurt Kitayama of Chico, CA are tied for fourth at 11-under after posting 68 and 70 respectively. Besides Tolan and Collins, three others are tied for sixth at 10-under 206 (Kyle Westmoreland of Houston, TX who graduated from the US Air Force Academy, Colorado State graduate Riley Arp of Ft. Collins, CO and Texas Tech alum Chris Ward of McKinney, TX).

Low amateur honors should prove to be a shoot-out as well with eight players within four strokes of each other led by Jimmy Makloski of Pueblo, CO who sits at 7-under 209 (tied for 12th overall). Three contestants (David Oraee of Greeley, CO, Blake Cannon of Mesa, AZ and Connor Klein of Lone Tree, CO) are one stroke behind at 6-under 210 (T21 overall).   Klein would have a one-stroke lead over Makloski if not for a two-stroke penalty assessed him for reporting late to the first tee.
