Spoiled for Choice

Scotty Cameron’s new line of putters raises the bar just that little bit higher.

Fellow grammar/punctuation nerds will note the name of Scotty Cameron’s new line-up is ‘Champions Choice’, not ‘Champion’s Choice’. With the apostrophe there, we might assume it had been inspired by one player in particular. That could have been Tiger Woods who famously used a Scotty Cameron Newport Tel3 to win the 1997 Masters. More likely though is that Brooks Koepka’s Button Back Tour-Only T10 Select Newport 2 which excelled during the Floridian’s four major titles in an 11-major stretch between 2017 and 2019, was the stimulus.

The putter Woods used to destroy the field at Augusta National in ‘97 featured Cameron’s first Teryllium insert – a soft-sounding, copper alloy comprising a dozen metals and backed by an elastomer membrane to dampen vibration and further enhance the club’s buttery feel.

Koepka’s model, officially introduced in 2008, celebrated the ten-year anniversary (hence ‘T10’) of Teryllium’s first appearance (Teryllium 2 arrived in 2001) and also introduced Cameron’s distinctive  Button Back design – three screws (Cameron says they resemble buttons) that held the Teryllium insert in place. Production of the Button Back Newport was limited to just 4,000.

The limited edition Champions Choice, which Cameron says he conceived following Koepka’s victories and the “incredible response” to the Teryllium 22 (launched 22 years after the original) putter introduced in 2019, features the combination of Teryllium insert and Button Back design, like Koepka’s putter, but incorporates the new shapes and milling upgrades that appeared in last year’s Special Select line-up. “As we were designing and manufacturing the Special Select line, upgrading and refining our blade and mid-mallet shapes, the Champions Choice project endured,” adds Cameron. “Now I’m finally ready to showcase it and offer three very special new designs based on everything we’ve done to refine the Special Select line, but with the Teryllium inlay and the Button Back look.”

The body of each of the new models is built using 303 Stainless Steel, and each features heel/toe weights – tungsten in the Newport and Newport 2, steel in the Flowback 5.5. The rounded mallet Flowback 5.5 also has a 6061 aluminum soleplate to save weight and increase the impact of the steel weights at either end of the putterhead.

The putters have an eye-catching red/white/blue paint-fill around the screws (button) in the cavity and in three ‘winner’s’ stripes that run diagonally across the heel and soleplate, and are finished with Scotty Cameron’s attractive, glare-resistant silver-misting.
