Radcliffe Takes CGA Sr. Stroke Play Title

DENVER — Scott Radcliffe of Rolling Hills Country Club completed a wire-to-wire performance in winning the Colorado Golf Association Senior Stroke Play Championship by three strokes Thursday at Cherry Creek Country Club.

After letting much of his lead slip away on the back nine, Radcliffe birdied the difficult 18th hole, where water guards the green. He put his approach shot on the par-4 10 feet from the hole, then drained the putt to finish strong.

In earning his second CGA individual championship — he also captured the 2004 Senior Match Play title — Radcliffe was the only player to finish under par for 54 holes. After having to go through a qualifying tournament just to get into the Senior Stroke Play, the 58-year-old business consultant closed with a 75 in windy conditions for a 1-under 215 total. 

Sean Forey of Bear Creek Golf Club, the low amateur in last week’s HealthOne Colorado Senior Open, posted the best score of the final round (71) despite a 13th-hole triple bogey to finish in second place at 218. Jerry Kidney of Overland Golf Course, who went into the final hole two strokes behind Radcliffe, shot a 75 Thursday to place third at 219, while five-time champion John Olive of the Broadmoor Golf Club (77-221) was fourth.

Kidney, 62, won the super-senior division for players 60 and older.
