Cart Master

Sun Mountain has been one of the leading golf cart manufacturers for over 20 years and its new Speed Cart V1R should be a hit with those that prefer to walk.

By Tony Dear

The last few weeks has been a typically hectic period for the launch of hard goods – drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, putters, and balls – focused on and around the week of the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando at the end of January. Even though a number of the big players didn’t attend this year’s event, they’ve all issued their usual share of tech-laden, space-age gear and jammed our various channels with marketing mumbo-jumbo and, technical jargon that has assured us, again, that these new products are revolutionary game-changers that will make us all better golfers.
We wouldn’t have it any other way, of course. And, in some/many/most cases, the hyperbole is perfectly justified. The geniuses and experts that make our golf clubs are absurdly bright.

Let’s change gears though and feature something a little softer. Yes, this week’s item is still plenty solid, and three-dimensional but, in a golfing sense, perhaps not quite as seductive or alluring as a driver.
And though it might not necessarily help you hit better shots, the Sun Mountain Speed cart V1R will enable you to enjoy the game more and, indeed, play more than you would without it.

Our highlighting of a Sun Mountain product comes just two days after the Missoula, Mont.-based company, founded by former pro and entrepreneur Rick Reimers in 1981 to offer soft, light, nylon bags but which now also produces state-of-the-art travel covers, carts and outerwear, was sold (undisclosed terms) to Los Angeles-based private investment firm, Solace Capital Partners (Reimers will continue to lead Finn Scooters which he launched in 2019).

Sun Mountain’s original Speed Cart debuted in 1999. Prior to that, push and pull carts existed obviously but weren’t terribly attractive or ergonomic. An efficient, light, folding, three-wheeled vehicle, the first Speed Cart sped up the cart’s evolution, and has continued to be a big seller thanks to numerous updates and innovations.

Sun Mountain says the 2022 V1R, which opens and folds in two easy steps, is the latest and greatest iteration with a redesigned handle, improved bag brackets, and more standard features like the drink holder, umbrella holder and mesh headcover tray. There’s a convenient slot for a mobile phone for those who like to take pictures of the course during the round or consult their GPS rangefinder app. Optional accessories clip easily to the handle and include items such as a cigar holder, sand/seed mix bottle holder, battery charger, cooler pouch, covers, seats, etc.
The upper and lower bag brackets are designed to work with a range of golf bag shapes and sizes and, naturally, work particularly well with the Sun Mountain Sync bag (the lower bag rest is shaped to ‘lock’ into the plastic bottom of the Sync golf bag to minimize side-to-side movement of the bag).
The Speed Cart V1R folds down to W 37” X H 16” X D 13” and weighs just 17.95lbs.

NB Sun Mountain warns demand for this product is high with many new golfers wanting to walk the course. If/when that happens, there is an option on the company’s web site to sign up for notifications about when the product is back in stock.
