Jimmy Outguns Brown and Davis to win 51st Colorado Open

Scot becomes second international player to win state open

Denver, CO: Jimmy Gunn of Dornoch, Scotland fired a final round 7-under 65 to beat past champions Zahkai Brown of Arvada, CO and Ian Davis of Edmond, OK and win the $23,000 first place prize at the 51st HealthONE Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

The 34-year-old Gunn, a former caddie at Royal Dornoch whose five-over-par 285 tied him for 27th in June's U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, is only the second foreign player to win the event. Canadian PGA Tour player Dan Halldorson won it in 1982.

Gunn entered the day trailing Davis, the 2014 champion, and Brown (2013), by two strokes.

But after racing to an early lead with birdies on his first two holes, Davis made triple bogey on the par-3 8th and bogey on the par-5 9th to fall from contention.

Brown held the lead until he hit it in the hazard on the par-4 10th and made bogey. That’s when Gunn siezed the opening. He birdied the 10th then eagled the par-5 12th and the par-4 14th to pull ahead for good. Brown’s bogey on the 17th gave Gunn a two-stroke lead going into the final hole. Brown missed a 15-footer for birdie and Gunn made a two-putt bogey to win by one.

Low amateur honors was captured by University of Colorado graduate David Oraee of Greeley, CO who posted a final score of 7-under 281 overall to win by two over Ethan Freeman of Denver and Blake Cannon of Mesa, AZ.
