Long Iron Tips from Charl Schwartzel

How to hit your long irons

It wouldn’t be hard to find areas of the game where a typical Tour player far outshines the rest of us amateurs, no matter our skill level. From long and accurate drives to precise touch and feel around the greens, they usually stand head and shoulders above the weekend golfers hacking it up at your local course. One area where this may be most evident is in hitting the long irons. Sure you may feel comfortable with a wedge in your hand, but as the numbers on the club get lower, so does the confidence level of many of us as we reach into the bag.

In this video from Nike golf, 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel shows three tips in under 60 seconds for hitting your long irons better. Maybe we can’t all hit the course with a swing as picturesque as his, but these tips may help you feel just a little more confident when reaching for your 4 iron.

Included:

  • How to fix your stance for your long irons
  • An adjustment to make at the top of the swing
  • Why tempo is so important with the long irons, and what many amateurs do wrong

As Schwartzel says in the video, “The long iron is always the test. If I hit the long irons well, I know I’m swinging well.”

Now that’s a feeling many of us can relate to.
