2016 BMW X5 xDrive 40e

2016 BMW X5 xDrive 40e Photos Review

In concept the plugin version of the BMW X5 is brilliant, but I may not be the best person to exploit the benefits that go with its electrification. I don’t have anywhere to charge it easily, and so I cant get remotely close to its rated combined electric EPA numbers. Other, independent tests don’t either though, so it is probably best to comment on how it drives while in its hybrid drive mode, which blends 111hp of electrifying spunk from its motor and battery pack with the 240hp, 2-liter turbo four that is its gasoline motivator. Despite weighing almost 5300 pounds (about 300 more than the 35i six-cylinder X5) it is only a couple tenths slower to 60mph and never feels underpowered. It leaps from the lights and always feels responsive.

Brake pedal modulation isn’t as good as other BMWs, though, as it is blending battery regeneration with actual stopping, and while it still rides and handles well—like most all third-generation X5s, it gets floaty at high speeds unless the adjustable dampers are put in one of the firmer modes, which degrades the ride.

All the attributes that make the current X5 a class leader: a lovely interior, cutting-edge but intuitive electronic interface, and terrific looks—at least on the 20-inch wheels all 40e models come with—are present and accounted for here; the challenge for me is that the diesel version gets better real-world economy and tows heavy loads really well. Oh, and it’s $4,400 cheaper. But for those looking to make the green statement, are anti-diesel, and who can charge it frequently (electric only range is 14 miles) this plugin combines BMW performance and pedigree with all the utility most want in a large SUV.
