The two days of CHSAA’s Boys Golf Championships concluded Tuesday in Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Sterling. One dynasty continued, while two schools took the hometown advantage.

Valor Christian Repeats as 4A Champs

Valor Christian High School lived up to its formidable talent by capturing the Colorado Class 4A Boy’s State Championship, played Monday and Tuesday at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo. The Eagles sprinted away from the field, winning with an 8-under-par 424 that was 23 strokes better than runner-up Pueblo South (15-over 447).

Individually, Taylor Rodriguez of Pueblo South surprised the field by capturing medalist honors with a 6-under 138 total. He finished two shots ahead of first-round leader, Valor’s Jake Staiano (140), and Ross Macdonald (142). Mesa Ridge’s Braden Bentley and Valor’s Coby Welch both shot 2-over 146 to round out the top five finishers.

Defending champion Valor came into the season finale with an undefeated 2014 record and a below-par season scoring average. The school has now won the state team title four times in the last six years.

Coronado Earns 5A Title

Coronado HS blistered the competition in the Colorado Class 5A Boy’s State Championship, held Monday and Tuesday at Colorado Springs Country Club, less than four miles away from the school. Coronado’s 20-over-par 446 team score was 19 strokes better than Lakewood and Regis Jesuit, both of which finished tied for second after shooting 41-over 467.
