The famous Colorado Springs resort course is being asked for the ninth time to challenge a USGA championship field. The U.S. Senior Open begins June 26 and organizers said the course and its natural defenses – the greens and the Cheyenne Mountain terrain – are ready to go.

“Success here is keeping the ball below the hole,” said Ben Kimball, USGA senior director of championships, during a press conference Monday at The Broadmoor’s ballroom. “People will have to understand the influence of the mountain.”

The East Course’s back-nine was designed by world-famous architect Donald Ross in 1918. The course’s front nine was largely created under the hand of Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1948. Together the challenging 18 hole course has become renowned in golf as having greens that are some of the hardest to read in the U.S.

“I think it’s going to drive them crazy in a very positive way,” Kimball said.

Hale Irwin, the three-time winner of the U.S. Open who went to high school and college in Boulder, urged the players coming to Colorado Springs to play within their own game and not try to do something on the course that they are not 100 percent confident in.

“You really have to factor in more than what you see; (the trouble) is disguised,” he said. “More than anything else you have to understand who you are. Understand what you can and can’t do.”

Under The Broadmoor’s director of golf, Russ Miller, the resort course typically hosts resort guests and club members. Unlike with many USGA course’s that are modified for major championships, The Broadmoor’s East Course will play in June largely the same way that it plays for its members and guests. The rough is expected to be grown out to about 3.5 inches long – a little longer than typical – with some patches being allowed to grow to 5-inches or more.

Kimball said the course is going to stand out within the Champions Tour season because of the difficulty.

“It’s probably not something they want every single week, but it’s our national championship,” he said.
