True Temper’s New Dynamic Golf X7 Carries the Day

The super-stiff shaft is for power hitters like the World No. 1

True Temper’s New Dynamic Golf X7 Carries the Day

True Temper can’t use Jason Day's name in any of its marketing materials because Day is contracted with TaylorMade.

However, there’s nothing stopping Colorado AvidGolfer from telling you that since he switched to the True Temper X7 shaft in his 5-9-iron, and pitching wedge last summer, the engaging Aussie has won six times on the PGA Tour: the 2015 RBC Canadian Open, 2015 PGA Championship, 2015 Barclays, 2015 BMW Championship, 2016 Arnold Palmer Invitational and last weekend’s Dell Match Play.

True Temper has dominated iron shafts since the day your great-grandfather swapped his hickory shafts for steel in the 1930s. At Bay Hill two weeks ago, 81 players had True Temper shafts in their irons. The company, originally part of the American Fork and Hoe Co. that was established in 1902, is based in Memphis, and launched its most famous brand – Dynamic Gold – in 1941.

True Temper's super stiff Dynamic Gold X7 Shaft

The X7 has been on the drawing board, and actually in the clubs of a handful of PGA Tour players, for just over a decade. But thanks to Day’s phenomenal success with the shaft, True Temper has at last decided to reveal it to a greater audience.

“It really started to gain momentum last year when the current #1 player in the world put it into his irons,” says Greg Cavill, Vice President of Alloy Engineering and Development at True Temper. “The win on Sunday at the WGC Dell Match Play was another stamp of validation.  The shaft’s success has created a tremendous amount of demand, so we have decided to make it available to the public.”

This is certainly exciting news, but we should point out only a small percentage of golfers will benefit from a shaft as stiff as the X7. “It is actually among the stiffest shafts on the market today,” says Cavill. “It’s made for the strongest of swingers.”

The X7 is only a gram or so heavier than an S4, but its diameter is greater from the grip-end down to the lower mid-section, allowing very powerful players to load and unload during the transition without losing control, says Cavill. He adds the shaft came about when a small number of PGA Tour pros complained they generated a little too much spin with their existing Dynamic Golf shafts.

The vast majority of readers probably don’t produce a little too much spin using an X100 shaft, but there will be some out there who are able to generate the sort of swing speed and power Jason Day can (but without his control, obviously) and who might benefit from a shaft like the X7.
