TaylorMade offering Rory McIlroy’s RORS-Proto irons for a limited time

Get The TaylorMade Irons While You Can

By Tony Dear

It happened three weeks ago and we’ve had five PGA Tour winners since (one opposite field tournament and the two-man team event in New Orleans) one of whom hit the ball just 253 times over the course of four rounds (tying the PGA Tour record), but it’s perfectly possible, likely even, you’re still talking in exciting tones about the Masters.

What Rory McIlroy did at Augusta National made his fans very happy, even if he did put them through heartache and despair before the final jubilation.

If you are a fan of the Northern Irishman, you may want to commemorate his win and completion of the Career Grand Slam somehow. TaylorMade gave you the opportunity to purchase the TP5 ball McIlroy plays (“RORS” is printed underneath the manufacturer’s logo) shortly after that memorable Sunday, but the window to do so closed pretty quickly – on April 20th.

You may get lucky and find one in the trees or rough at your home course (remember it’s not him hitting them but retail golfers like you and me) but, unfortunately, you can no longer buy them. TaylorMade is giving you another chance to get some McIlroy-approved equipment, however, by making available the irons he conceived and has used since becoming a TaylorMade ambassador in 2017.

Yes, the financial outlay is a little more demanding than it was for the ball, but we think the cost of this beautiful and significant set of irons almost borders on reasonable – something of an anomaly in today’s golf equipment market (DTC products notwithstanding). Plus, the window to make your purchase is a little wider than it was for the TP5. TaylorMade announced the availability of the RORs-Proto irons last Thursday and you have until the 15th to get them.

You still have nine days to reserve your set (rather than making only so many of its Limited Edition products, TaylorMade has now begun offering them in specific time periods.)

The RORS-Proto is modeled on TaylorMade’s P·730 iron which was the company’s blade iron from 2017 to 2019 when it was replaced by the P7TW. It looks every inch the elite-golfer’s iron with heads forged from 1025 carbon-steel, compact blade lengths, and minimal offset. McIlroy’s exact specifications may not suit you, but the RORS-Proto can be made to your specs – so while it looks like a club used by the finest ball-striker(s) in the world, it can still be fit to a golfer with a 7-iron swing speed of 85mph rather than McIlroy’s 100mph (or thereabouts).

Other design quirks are: the grooves (the P·730 had TaylorMade’s 14 MX9 grooves while the RORS-Proto has 16 TW2 grooves – same as the P7TW – which generates more friction/spin compared to the P·730.); the topline on the 7 and 8-iron (slightly thinner than they were on the P·730 – McIlroy’s preference); and the four colored dots on the hosel, signifying the four majors.

As you might expect for a pro tour-inspired iron, the lofts are fairly traditional.

Now remember, you have until the 15th.
