Basketball great Steph Curry has launched a grip kit with Golf Pride to support his Underrated brand
By Tony Dear
Because he was shorter than most aspiring basketball players (he’s 6’3”), Steph Curry says he “didn’t pass the eye test” and was largely overlooked by college scouts…before going on to win four NBA Championships with the Golden State Warriors so far, and be named NBA MVP twice and an NBA All-State ten times. So, in 2019, he launched his Underrated brand seeking to give players not being watched by college programs the opportunity to showcase their talent. The confirmed golf addict also partnered with historically-black college Howard University to create its first men’s and women’s Division 1 golf teams.
In 2022, Curry founded the Underrated Golf Tour, giving junior golfers from communities where golf wasn’t commonly played the chance to compete in regional events and qualify to play for the Curry Cup. Its website states the brand’s main goal is to “provide equity, access and opportunity to student-athletes from every community by balancing participation in the sport to truly reflect our society.”
Last week, Underrated announced a partnership with Golf Pride to offer grip kits designed with Curry’s input. Golf Pride began working with Underrated last year to fund college scholarships and provide employment internships and other experience-based opportunities for Underrated Golf athletes.
Only 8,200 of the kits have been made (an homage to Curry’s 82-game NBA season) each with 14 MCC Plus 4 grips, a one-of-a-kind ball marker, and a collector’s display. The grips are available in standard and midsize options, and feature Curry’s “SC” logo in the upper hand and the UNDERRATED three-star logo front and center.
James Ledford, President of Golf Pride, said that, through Underrated, the basketball legend’s impact on the game had the potential to benefit generations of golfers. “This marks our first collaboration with a global icon of this stature,” he added, “and working side-by-side with Stephen to bring this concept to life has been both exciting and motivating for our team.”
Curry, meanwhile, said he has been using Golf Pride grips for many years and is pleased to have another partner who “fully embraces the vision of Underrated Golf.”
