Sqairz labels itself the ‘Distance Golf Shoe’ and it’s now available in a wider fit
By Tony Dear
They’ve been around long enough (four years), and you’ve possibly seen enough of them now, for the distinctive box-toed Sqairz shoe not to be a novelty anymore.
You likely did a double-take the first time you saw them – just like you did the first time you witnessed someone putting with a long, chin-anchored, broomstick putter – and perhaps there is still a modicum of shock when you see someone in your group with a pair, but these days the person in the fourball wearing Sqairz could very well be you.
The company recently added to its product range with the introduction of its first wide-fit shoes. You no doubt thought the straight toe made Sqairz look wide enough but, according to the company, it received a significant amount of feedback from golfers requiring a broader fit in general, not just in the toe.
Sqairz are now available in an EE fit (in the U.S., a number indicates the shoe’s length while a letter is used for its width. The earlier in the alphabet the letter, the narrower the shoe – A is for pencil-shaped feet, E for pencil box-shaped feet. In men’s sized-10 shoes, a narrow A-width shoe is typically 3 3/4″-wide, while an E-width shoe is 4 1⁄8″-wide).
Robert Winskowicz, Sqairz’s founder and CEO, comes across as the type that’s consumed by the game, lives it 24/7, and is so overwhelmingly convinced of his product’s quality and effectiveness he had Nick Faldo tell us Sqairz were the “Distance golf shoe” and that they were the best golf shoes he’d worn in his life which, considering he’s now 67, has been playing the game for 55 years and, during a pretty solid professional career, won 43 tournaments including six majors, is quite the statement.
Winskowicz says Sqairz took all its customers’ recommendations and “perfected the expansion, ensuring that the wide shoes provide the same level of stability, balance, and comfort that our brand is known for.
“We see the addition of wide-sizing as more than just a product update,” he adds. “It’s a part of our pursuit of helping athletes perform at their highest level. This is a tangible example of how we’re investing in our customers, creating models that will allow us to continue bringing our performance footwear to as many athletes as possible.”
What Winskowicz says touches on hyperbolic at times, but there is no denying the research behind Sqairz’s claims nor how stable the shoes make you feel during the swing. Likewise, there’s little doubting how comfortable they are – not TRUE LInkswear All-Knit or Payntr X 005 Fast Fit comfortable perhaps, but surprisingly snug for a shoe as sturdy-looking, rugged even, as this.
The attractive Speed2 has been available since April, and the newly-introduced wide-fit sizes will make more golfers comfortable in Sqairz. It’s not just golfers who have discovered the advantages of a square toe, though, as Sqairz also entered the baseball market earlier this year.
A nice touch when your Sqairz arrive in the mail is that, besides the shoes, you’ll find a pair of socks and different-colored replacement laces inside the box. Also worth noting is that Sqairzlaces feature printed, silicone nubs that are designed to prevent you from ever having to retie your laces.
