So Help Me

Callaway’s new CB Wedges lend the game-improver welcome assistance.

Watching the pros pinch the ball off tight turf around the greens and make it shimmy and stop abruptly close to the hole is a wonderful thing. Pinching or ‘nipping’ requires a degree of precision, however, and not all of us can do it. Amateur golfers whose handicaps hover at or above a certain level don’t do ‘precise’ or ‘precision’ terribly well. Not only do they rarely bring the club back down to the ball on the correct angle of attack or descent angle, they also tend to miss the sweetspot fairly consistently.

The forgiveness perimeter weighting affords the game-improver is, therefore, invaluable. Yes, the need for that forgiveness will be much more keenly felt when hitting a 5-iron than a sand wedge, but most golfers will take a little extra help whenever they can get it.

Callaway’s new oversize, chrome-finish CB Wedges (‘CB’ stands for ‘Cavity Back’) replace the Mack Daddy CB Wedge that was released in 2020. That club featured the company’s famous Jaws grooves – scoring lines that covered the face of the sand and lob wedges. There was a thick top line and the sole was ultra-wide with high degrees of bounce to help golfers get the ball out of thick rough and sand.

All those features are, not surprisingly, present in the new CB wedge which benefits from one major upgrade – the addition of Callaway’s urethane microspheres which have been present in its hollow-body irons for several years and which help to absorb vibration thus improving the sound and feel of impact. Callaway’s flagship Jaws Raw wedges don’t have those.

The wide sole on the new club actually has three planes that help you avoid digging the leading edge into the ground, move the club through rough and sand, and open the face for really lofted shots.

There are ten degrees of bounce in the 48˚  PW, 12 degrees in the 50˚  and 52˚  clubs, 14 degrees in the sand wedges (54/56), and 12 degrees in the lob wedges (58/60).

In review, the word ‘help’ appears four times here (well, five now). Because, you see, that’s what the CB wedge is designed to do.
