Give Yourself a Head Start

Your address position is so sound it makes Rory McIlroy’s look awkward. You move the clubhead away from the ball low and slow just as Harmon, Haney et al advise. The shaft is perfectly on plane going back, and the clubface position flawless at the top. The transition into the downswing is smooth and unhurried. You’re all set to strike the ball cleanly and powerfully.

But, you suddenly feel the urge to ‘go after it’. That little extra aggression causes your head to move forward, your hips slide rather than turn, and the club gets stuck on the inside. You’re way ahead of the ball at impact, and in order to prevent a nasty block to the right, you instinctively flip the wrists at impact…and hit a wild hook to the left.

It’s the oldest rule in the book: KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL! Instructors are quick to warn against keeping it so stock still it restricts a full and comfortable shoulder turn, but everyone knows excessive side-to-side movement invariably throws your timing out, losing you power and accuracy.

There are dozens of tools aimed at helping you limit head movement, some more effective than others obviously. Until now, however, none of them has been designed by an MIT graduate (who also has an MBA from Harvard) working in conjunction with a decorated teaching professional mentored by the great Ken Venturi.

Rich Kosowsky, the MIT guy with BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering, is a keen golfer and a student of Tim Tierney at Weston GC in Massachusetts. Tierney is a two-time Massachusetts PGA Teacher of the Year.

One of the most important lessons Tierney ever gave Kosowsky focused on head position, Tierney explaining that the head must be kept ‘within a confined zone from address though impact’.

Kosowsky put his smarts to good use, coming up with the PowerPlane which utilizes high precision ultrasonics and patent-pending technology to sense head position, and provide immediate feedback should your head move out of the ‘confined zone’.

Just strap the sensor to your hat, open the Power Plane and place it on the ground. If your head moves outside the zone defined by the PowerPlane, you hear a gentle beep, and can obviously alter your swing accordingly.

The PowerPlane ticks all our training aid boxes. It’s based on a sound concept, well built, easy to use, lightweight (1.5lbs) and easily set up, doesn’t make you look like the desperate hacker, and most importantly, extremely effective. It comes with a free hat, free shipping, and a 30-day money back guarantee.
