Ping Putters: a Welcome Return

Reviving a name from the past, Ping’s new Scottsdale range of putters makes the heart feel glad

By Tony Dear

As it usually does, news of a Ping putter release sent ripples of satisfaction through putter enthusiasts on Monday morning (it was Ping’s second putter release of the year as a few new PLD models were introduced in January).

A handful of putter makers trigger a feeling of excitement with the announcement of a new family/style/model, and other brands certainly have their devotees, of course. But for some of us, word of a new line of Ping putters makes the world seem a better, less hostile place, if only for a moment.

And it borders on elation when that new family is so large – nine putters strong (ten if counting the Craz-E CB). The range, named ‘Scottsdale’ – another aspect that will appeal to Ping putter fans and one it hasn’t employed for over a decade – features classic, familiar shapes all made from 17-4 Stainless Steel.

They each have a stepless Chrome shaft and come in a range of necks/hosels to accommodate every type of stroke – straight back/through, slight arc, and strong arc.

Each putter has a soft PEBAX insert across the entire face (the DS72 alone has a narrower insert). The PEBAX is softer than in previous Ping putters but engineered to rebound, meaning that while the impact feels soft, the ball should travel the required distance. And inserts are invariably lighter than a steel face, so Ping could take that saved weight and push it to the perimeter of the putter, increasing its MOI.

The shading/coloring (lighter tone at the front) has been designed to draw attention to the front of the putter and thus help with alignment, and the blue accents add an attractive touch that match the blue of the new SuperStroke PT 2.0 grips (the 37.75 inch Craz-E has a longer, counter-balanced grip). The PP58 and PP60 are available for those who prefer Ping’s putter grips.

Something else that’s worthy of special mention is the retail price, which, again, makes you feel good about the world, albeit briefly, and Ping’s new WEBFIT putter app, which will help you find and customize the putter that’s right for you.
