Milled to Perfection

Ping’s three new Matte Black PLD Milled models combine style, stability and precision.

By Tony Dear

Ping’s Putting Lab was established over 20 years ago and serviced the best players in the game – elites who could have their flatstick crafted by the company’s master-fitters. A few years ago, Ping extended the Lab’s reach, creating the PLD (Putter Lab Design) brand with a few limited-edition models, and exactly 53 weeks ago, the PLD Custom program was born offering golfers three levels of PLD experience:

  • PLD Custom, the most costly level, where full-on equipment junkies (and those not afraid to put up big money for something truly special) could have their putter custom-built by the Ping Wrx team following a Tour player-like fitting.
  • PLD Limited where collectors could purchase the most impactful and influential models in Ping’s history, and putters customized to a certain pro’s exact specifications.
  • PLD Milled – a line of four fully-milled Tour-proven models – the Anser, Anser 2 Satin, DS72, and Prime Tyne 4.

Last week, Ping announced the addition of three new models (all Matte Black) to the PLD Milled line – the Anser 2 Matte Black, Anser D, and Oslo 4. “We’re continuing to add tour-inspired models to bring golfers the latest in score-lowering performance on the green,” says Ping’s CEO and President John K. Solheim.
Like the models they join in the PLD Milled line-up, the new putters are forged from a block of 303 stainless steel and feature Deep AMP (Aggressive Milling Pattern) face technology which not only looks attractive but enhances the putter’s sound, feel and speed too. Each putter spends more than four hours being prodded, poked, cut, and shaved by a CNC Milling Machine which is a cutting tool programmed by a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system to remove the desired amount of material with extreme precision (the time it takes to mill one of these putters helps explain why they don’t come cheap.)

Same technology as the Anser 2 Satin – heel/toe weights to make it stable at impact even on slightly off-center strikes – but now offered in Matte Black. The Satin and Matte Black Anser 2s differ from the classic Anser with their slightly longer, slimmer profile. Ideal for a stroke with a slight arc. Single white alignment line.

Another Matt Black model and very similar to the original Anser but with a deeper ‘D’ profile. The extra weight helps stabilize the putter which was designed in conjunction with Bubba Watson. Also ideal for players with a slight arc stroke. And a single, white alignment line.

A semi-circular-head mallet that’s popular with Tour pros, and designed alongside Tyrell Hatton. The Oslo 4 has an Anser 4-style hosel making it ideal for golfers with a strong arc stroke.
