Martin Wins Golf Tournament for 2nd Consecutive Year

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State women’s golfer Melissa Martin won her second consecutive title in the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Stroke Play championship earlier this summer, overtaking two Colorado Golf Hall of Famers in the final round.

Playing at the par 75 Lakewood Country Club, Martin shot an 80-73-76 for a three-round score of 229, five strokes ahead of second-place finisher Janet Moore. Brooke Collins, Kim Eaton and Sarah Faller rounded out the top five. Both Moore and Eaton are in the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame and have won the tournament multiple times.

Martin becomes the first player to win consecutive championships in the event since Nicki Cutler in 2000-01.

Former teammate and recent graduate Natalie Stone shot a bogey-less round of 67 (par 71) to qualify for the No. 1 seed in match play at the Women’s State Amateur, that took place at the Davis Park Golf Course near her hometown of Bountiful, Utah, Tuesday. Stone overcame each of her closest four opponents in match play for her second consecutive title.

Meanwhile, junior Brianna Espinoza shot a 79 to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Wednesday at the Desert Forest Golf Course in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tournament will be played Aug. 9-15 at the Charlotte Country Club in North Carolina. This is the second consecutive year Espinoza has qualified for the event.
