Long, Straight Iron Shots
Losing distance and accuracy with your irons can take par out of the equation. Fix that problem with this simple drill, from Me and My Golf.
Leaving your clubface open can lead to all sorts of mishaps in the golf swing, most notably loss of distance and the development of a slice. An “open”clubface is the excessive rotation of the club in the takeaway that results in improper face path at impact. This can be the result of disconnection between the body, arms, and hands in the backswing. Players who struggle with keeping the clubface square often have a difficult time connecting the torso with the arms and hands at the beginning of the swing.
A great and simple drill to combat this issue is the one-handed backswing:
- Tuck your bottom hand beneath your lead armpit at address
- Slowly take the club back, rotating the torso in the backswing
- Notice the “closed” clubface as it points toward the ground
- IMPORTANT: The club grip should be pointing toward the belt buckle, not away from it during takeway!
- Repeat at higher speeds and move into full, two handed shots
