What do a hawk, fox, bull snake and goose have in common? While that might sound like a start of a really bad joke, all four represent the wildlife you might encounter on a typical day at Homestead Golf Course in Lakewood.
Opened in June 2002, Homestead was designed to resemble a working cattle ranch. Unique features of the course include the use of rustic tee markers, log fencing, a cart “barn” and a windmill. More traditional features include a complete practice facility with a driving range, target greens, putting greens and a practice sand trap.
On the course, this 18-hole, Par-65 championship short course checks in at just over 5,400 yards. Don’t let the shorter distance fool you, though. Even the most experienced golfers will find Homestead to be an enjoyable experience that requires every club in your bag to navigate two distinctive 9-hole layouts.
The Prairie Nine sits on part of the former Fehringer cattle ranch. The gentle rolling hills treat golfers to pleasant views of the course from elevated tee boxes. The 6th hole, aptly named “Silver Dollar”, will leave you feeling euphoric if you can hit the green with your tee shot.
The Mountain Nine plays in the bowl of Mt. Carbon, once a carbon mine from World War II, and is surrounded by spectacular vistas of Denver. Enjoy quiet streams and tranquil lakes throughout the course, and be sure to take in the 360-degree view of the foothills to downtown Denver from the tee box on the 13th hole.
Homestead Golf Course is a truly a local gem that is easily accessible to the metro Denver region. The championship design allows for quicker play than traditional 18-hole courses and the topography of the course makes for a challenging and enjoyable experience for golfers of all ability levels. Come and see what thousands of Colorado golfers have already found out for themselves. Homestead is a great course at an outstanding price.
