Dr. Homer McClintock, who helped orchestrate the acquisition of Evans Scholars house for caddies at the University of Colorado, passed away October 12 at the age of 99.

The retired neurosurgeon would have celebrated his 100th birthday October 23.

A Pittsburgh native who served in the Navy during World War II, Dr. McClintock and his family arrived in Denver in 1952. He soon joined Cherry Hills Country Club, where he remained a member for the next 65 years, serving three terms as club president.

In addition to being a fine player who qualified for the 1964 British Amateur Championship, Dr. McClintock served on the Colorado Golf Association’s Board of Governors for 20 years, and in 1968, he and fellow Colorado Golf Association governor Sonny Brinkerhoff and CGA President Bill Campbell purchased the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house at the University of Colorado.

After successfully linking the CGA’s Eisenhower Scholarship to the Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholarship, they dedicated the building at 1029 Broadway in Boulder as the Eisenhower-Evans Scholars House.

Nearly a half-century later, the house underwent a $6 million renovation. It reopened in early 2016, with Dr. McClintock present to dedicate it as well.

To date, more than 430 high-achieving caddies with financial need have lived in what is now known as the Evans Scholars House. All of them received full tuition and housing as they worked towards their degrees.

In honor of McClintock’s contributions, the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame honored him during last year’s induction ceremony at Cherry Hills with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The good doctor, humble and gracious as ever, received his award and a standing ovation.

The following video, made for that occasion, chronicles his accomplishments.

Dr. McClintock’s legacy lives on through his sons Jeff and Rich—both of whom have passionately supported Cherry Hills and overall growth of Colorado golf. Rich would serve as chairman of the 1983 U.S. Mid-Amateur (won by Jay Sigel) and 1990 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills (won by Phil Mickelson).

His legacy as also endures on in the past, present and future Evans Scholars who live at 1029 Broadway in Boulder. One of the current crop of scholars is his grandson and former Cherry Hills caddie, Keane McClintock.
