The BMW Championship, the second-leg of the FedEx Cup series that is coming to Castle Pines Golf Club Aug. 20 to 25, will provide a test of golf as well as funds for caddy scholarships.

The tournament organizer, the Western Golf Association, uses the proceeds from each year’s BMW Championship to fund its Evans Scholars Foundation. The foundation has been around since 1930 and says the BMW has generated $50 million for the Evans Scholar Foundation since 2007.

Logan Byler, an Evans Scholar graduate of the University of Colorado, speaks during media-day for the 2024 BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club.

This spring a record 340 students from across the country were awarded Evans Scholarships. This year 1,130 caddies are enrolled in 24 universities as Evans Scholars, with the Colorado chapter at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The CU chapter was established in 1967 and has 540 alumni.

Among them are Duffy Solich and his brother George. The two attended CU as Evans Scholars and were instrumental in bringing the BMW Championship to Castle Pines. George Solich is the club’s president.

“(The Evans Scholarships) changed the course of our lives,” Duffy said during Tuesday’s media day of the BMW Championship.

Solich serves on the Evans Scholar Foundation board and said they are continuing to seek more so that the number of caddies receiving scholarships can grow to 1,500 a year by 2030.

Logan Byler, a Valor Christian High School graduate, attended C.U. in part through an Evans Scholar scholarship. He said his college choices would have been very different if it were not for the scholarship. He graduated C.U. in May with a degree in architecture.
