Danzante Bay to Debut on the Baja

Sea of Cortez Course is a Mexican Masterpiece

By Chris Duthie

Of all the world destinations I have visited, my hands-down favorite is Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. From Ensenada to La Paz to Cabo San Lucas, these 750 miles of stunning, sun-washed landscapes and beach towns entice experiential travelers at every turn, be it for unspoiled natural habitats, sherbet-colored canyons, unadulterated night skies, addictive fish tacos or agave-spiced tequila.

The excitement continues. In early December, a highly anticipated Rees Jones-designed golf course will debut within a 734-acre master planned community amongst the Islands of Loreto, a worlds-apart region located about 200 miles north of La Paz and 300 miles north of Cabo.

The 7,237-yard Danzante Bay Golf Club, routed into steep Sierra de Giganta escarpments and punctuated with cliff-hanging holes that overlook the Sea of Cortez, “is a complete journey that golfers will really enjoy taking again and again,” says Jones.

A sizable portion of that bliss undoubtedly will be the par-3 17th (pictured atop), which embraces the Sea of Cortez and its mesmerizing Isla Monserrate. “I’ve built a lot of spectacular holes in my career in some of the most beautiful locations,” says Jones. “The 17th ranks among the most memorable holes anywhere in the world.”

Owen Perry, owner and president of The Villa Group, developer of the property, echoes those sentiments. “[The course] is like no other place,” he says. “We have been able to create a golf experience that changes as you play, on a golf course that allows you to see landscape and wildlife you never would have seen before.”

Danzante Bay Golf Club is a premier guest amenity for neighboring Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa, a 4,447-acre luxury seaside property celebrated for its pristine beaches, scuba diving and snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, sport fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, desert hiking and whale watching. Guests also enjoy three signature restaurants, a 39,000-square-foot Sabila Spa, fitness center, tennis and complementary shuttle transportation to historic Loreto, famous for its 1697 mission.

Loreto is a two-hour nonstop Alaska Airways flight from Los Angeles or a six-hour drive from Los Cabos. For special stay-and-play packages at Villa del Palmar, go online here. For more information about Danzante Bay Golf Club, go online here.
