Freshwoman Greb goes low but team struggles in Vegas.

For their second start of the spring season, the Lady Rams of CSU were out in Sin City at the Rebel Beach Invitational hosted by UNLV. The competition took place at the par-72 Spanish Trail Country Club.

Round one saw freshwoman Haley Greb (Pendleton, Oregon) and Nevada native and junior Katrina Prendergast (Sparks, Nevada) go the lowest of all the competing Rams-they carded a pair of 1 over 73s. Recently named Mountain West women’s golfer of the week Ellen Secor (Portland, Oregon) posted a 6-over-par 78, and her slow start proved costly as she was unable to get herself in contention. The team took 301 strokes to get around the course once, and they found themselves T5 going into round two.

The second loop around the course was all Greb. The youngster followed up her steady play in round one with an impressive round of even par. She was alone in third at 1 over par on the individual leaderboard, and within striking distance. Prendergast was the next lowest player for the Rams, and she sat at 9 over par through two rounds and in a tie for 34th. The team fell into a tie for 9th after the second leg of the tournament.

The team dropped yet again after the third and final round to 11th place out of 12 competing teams. Greb stumbled to the finish line and posted a closing 7-over-par 79. Even with her mediocre performance in round three, she was able to tie her best finish of the season at T11. Prendergast had the lowest final round score-she shot 75 and wound up in a tie for 28th.

Going two-for-two in team titles in just a two-day span was host UNLV. They followed the Rebel men, who just won the National Invitation Tournament in Tucson, and won their home tournament at 17 over par by two strokes. Kendra Dalton of BYU won on the individual side at even par.

The team has a couple of weeks off before heading to sunny Hawaii to play in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational March 13-14. There they will look to improve as a team as the Mountain West Conference Championship fast approaches.
