In their first tournament of the spring season, the members of Colorado State women’s golf team tied their highest finish of the fall campaign, coming in third place in the 14-team Gold Rush tournament hosted by Long Beach State in California.

Sophomore Ellen Secor was a big reason behind the team’s strong finish.

The sophomore from Portland, Ore., wasted no time returning to her competitive form. On her first loop around Long Beach’s 6,189-yard par-72 El Dorado Park Golf Course, Secor carded a 1-under-par 71 which consisted of five birdies. One of the hardest things to do in golf is follow up a solid round with another solid round, and Secor did just that—all in one day. On her second loop Secor went bogey-free and added two birdies for a 2-under-par 70. She was in the lead by three strokes heading into the final round.

Junior Katrina Prendergast (Sparks, Nevada) shot back-to-back 75s on day one to land in a tie for 15th on the individual leaderboard with sophomore Jessica Sloot (Fruit Heights, Utah) at 6 over par. The team was in second and trailed only Georgia by one stroke as the final round approached.

Day two came with excellent playing conditions, but neither Secor nor the team was able to convert their hot starts into a victory. Despite an early birdie on her fourth hole of the day, Secor closed with three bogeys and no birdies. She shot a 2-over-par 74 and earned a solo second place finish—her best of the season.

Idaho’s Sophie Hausmann shot a clutch 4-under-par 68 to finish atop the leaderboard at 4 under par, three shots clear of Secor. Hausmann and Secor were the only players in the field that ended in red numbers.

The Rams shot their highest score of the competition in the final round with an aggregate 12-over-par 300, and this put them in third position when play ceased. Their final score was 28 over par. Prendergast shot a closing 75 to wind up T15 individually. Freshwoman Haley Greb (Pendleton, Oregon) finished with a steady 74 to earn a T22 finish.

The University of Georgia won the team competition with a final score of 19 over par.

The Rams will tee it up next at Rebel Beach Day Feb. 26-27 in Las Vegas.
