Wide Bottom

SuperStroke’s new full-swing REVL Element 4X might help you form a grip where the hands work together rather than independently of each other

By Tony Dear

When it came to applying power in the golf swing, Ben Hogan wished he had “three right hands” (though he began life as a left-hander, Hogan transitioned to playing right-handed in his mid-teens as left-handed clubs were so scarce. His right hand therefore became the bottom hand when he gripped a club). Few golfers, however, knew better than he did how destructive the right hand could be.

In “Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf”, Hogan said the hands must work as “ONE UNIT” (note he used all-caps) and feel like they are “knitted vigorously together”. Each hand, he added, had an important role, and the right hand should be positioned so it could perform its share of the work, but no more than its equal share.  “This means,” he went on, “subduing the natural tendency of the right forefinger and thumb to take charge.”

These “pincer fingers”, as he called them, were great for opening doors or holding coffee cups, but were “potential swing-wreckers” and would ruin you if allowed to become too influential. A great way to prevent this from happening, Hogan said, was to practice swinging the club with the right thumb and forefinger “entirely off the shaft”. This, he asserted, would give you a sense of having “just one corporate hand on the club” which was, of course, the ideal.

It’s likely SuperStroke had to be careful – i.e. refrain from – using Hogan’s name or likeness to promote its new REVL Element 4X grip. But helping you to avoid the pitfalls Hogan spoke of in “Five Lessons” is essentially what it does. To even out the pressure exerted by both hands and prevent the right thumb and forefinger from acting like pincers, the lower half of the grip has a reduced taper, which means it doesn’t narrow toward the bottom nearly as much as a traditional grip.

As Hogan discovered through constant practice, quieting the inclination of the right thumb and forefinger to apply the hit helped stabilize his clubhead and prevent the hook of which he was so wary.

The REVL Element 4X makes it feel like four extra layers of tape have been added to the lower half of the grip – something golfers, including many Tour players, have done for decades.

The bottom half of the grip isn’t just wider, though; it’s also made from a different material. While the top half is a combination of cord and SuperStroke’s cord-friendly ACE compound – Advanced Cohesive Elastomer – which gives a firm, tacky feel and performs especially well in wet conditions, the bottom half is made from the company’s softer, more durable Genesis+ compound, which is designed to give greater comfort and feedback.

The REVL Element 4X is finished with SuperStroke’s signature ULTRA-TAC X-pattern to increase the number of contact points for superior traction.
