Takomo has put everything into the new club

It’s time we featured a relatively young manufacturer that has been building a mostly positive reputation over the last few years but, for one reason or another, has never appeared on our pages or website. Featuring this company also allows us to mention a country that online searches indicate we’ve never mentioned.

Takomo is a direct-to-consumer brand based in Turku, southern Finland, about two hours west of the capital, Helsinki. Founded by Sebastian Haapahovi in 2019, the company began by offering irons only, launching its first club – the game-improvement 101 – in 2021. It has since branched out to fill other sections of the bag and introduced its first driver – the Ignis 1 – in July 2025.

The multi-material club (carbon crown, titanium face/body, and three movable tungsten weights in the heel, toe, and rear) was made with high-quality components, and as a DTC brand, Takomo was able to price it at just $319 – about half the price of top-of-the-line OEM drivers. The club earned a solid reputation and was popular with value-conscious golfers.

There was a problem, however. As most DTC brands typically do, Takomo began selling the Ignis 1 before ensuring it conformed to regulations (it’s common for DTC brands to assume competitive golfers don’t use their equipment). As a European company, Takomo eventually sent the Ignis 1 to the R&A which, earlier this year, informed Takomo that, with the heaviest of the three movable weights in the toe and the second heaviest in the heel, the club exceeded the permissible CT limit (in basic terms – the face was very slightly too springy).

Earlier, we noted Takomo was building a ‘mostly’ positive reputation. Its clubs were obviously very good and remarkably good value, but its first driver, which it had already begun selling, was later found to be non-conforming with a particular setup configuration.

Importantly, though, Takomo was quick to alert customers in the U.S. (the USGA and R&A use the same rules, so the club was non-conforming all over the world), saying that “some” drivers “might” exceed limitations, and assuring those who had already purchased the club that a new, conforming club would be sent to them free of charge.  The company no doubt took a financial hit, but it did what it could to rectify an unfortunate situation.

The new, conforming clubhead is the Ignis 2, which Takomo recently made available to everyone. Instead of three moveable weights, the new driver has just one changeable weight in the rear. The standard weight is 3 grams, but swap it out for the 8-gram weight and the already forgiving club (thanks to the multi-material construction – lightweight carbon crown and HST160C titanium alloy body) produces an even higher MOI and creates a higher launch, making it ideal for slower-swing speed golfers who have difficulty getting the ball up in the air and keeping it there.

An eight-position hosel sleeve allows you to increase or decrease the loft by as much as 2 degrees, and you can also adjust the lie angle to make it slightly more upright, which should help you minimize your slice.
