Great Getaways as the leaves begin to turn
By Jim Bebbington
West of the Las Vegas Strip, the community of Summerlin offers a quieter escape with excellent golf, dining, and access to the scenic parklands west of the city.

On the Course
The Golf Summerlin courses are three of the region’s best and most accessible. Highland Falls was the first to open, in 1999, designed by PGA Tour veteran Billy Casper and his partner Greg Nash. The three courses were designed to be player-friendly but with enough challenges to interest golfers of all levels.
Situated west of downtown Las Vegas, the course winds into the nearby foothills to add rare elevation challenges for players. That elevation also rewards players with some of the most sweeping views of downtown. Fairways are generous for the most part, but the course is sprinkled with enough ponds, creeks and bunkers to give everyone a challenge.
The terrain mellows slightly at Summerlin’s second course, EagleCrest Golf Course. Fairways are again generous at this executive course, which offers the perfect short-course second round of any visit. The course is designed for players trying to get a round in but are pressed for time; most players can make it around in three hours.
Palm Valley Golf Course is a combination of the two: fairways and greens are a little more rolling. Bunkers are used here to a maximum effect to challenge players to hit with accuracy.
Things to Do Nearby
If you’re near Summerlin during your Las Vegas stay, the area is ideal for a mix a luxury and natural splendor. The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is perfect for hiking, scenic drives, photography, and enjoying the desert landscape. Winter visits are when this region truly shines.

Downtown Summerlin also offers outdoor shopping, entertainment, restaurants, events, concerts and performances. The area is home to Las Vegas Ballpark, home of the Las Vegas Aviators, for a budget-friendly night of minor-league baseball.
Restaurants
The Honey Salt is a farm-to-table inspired menu with fresh ingredients, highly rated and very approachable. The JW Marriott hotel has Ai Pazzi, a high-end Italian eatery ideal for a special night out. Fine Company in Downtown Summerlin offers contemporary American fare all day – casual but polished. The Vintner Grill is a good American bistro.
