Making it: Colorado pro tour aspirants have mixed success

DU alumni Chris Korte makes finals of PGA Tour Q-School; LPGA’s Becca Huffer falls short for 2025

This is the season when professional golfers position themselves for their 2025 seasons and Colorado players are having mixed success so far.

Chris Korte, a Littleton-native and former member of the University of Denver men’s golf team, earned a spot last week into the Korn Ferry Q-School final round. He achieved that by finishing in fourth place in the Q-School second round competition at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Georgia.

Korte shot of four-day score of 5-under, placing himself in the top 16 finishers and ties who earned passage to the Q-School finals.

The Korn Ferry Q-School process is one of the gateways for players to earn their PGA Tour cards. The finals will be played this weekend, Dec. 12 to 15, at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Korte, 28, played at Regis Jesuit High School and then from 2014 to 2017 at the University of Denver. He has played professional golf on mini tours since and sought his PGA card. In September he won the GCU Shootout, a stop on the Asher Tour, played at the Grand Canyon University Golf Club. In 2024 he played in more than 30 tournaments and qualifiers, including several stops on the PGA Tour America’s tournaments in Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Canada.

By making the Q-School finals Korte guarantees that he has some access in 2025 to tournaments tied to the PGA Tour. The top five and ties this weekend will earn PGA Tour cards for the 2025 season. The remaining field will earn status for the 2025 Korn Ferry season or the PGA TOUR Americas events.

Becca Huffer of Highlands Ranch fell short last week of her bid to earn her LPGA Tour card for 2025. Huffer made the finals of the LPGA Q-School competition and played Dec. 5 to 9 at Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Ala. The top 25 and ties received LPGA status for 2025 and Huffer missed the cut.

Huffer narrowly missed out in 2023 earning her LPGA Tour card, and did compete in six LPGA Tour tournaments in 2024. Her best finish was making the cut and tying for 61st at the Dana Open in July. Huffer is a 2012 Notre Dame graduate and since 2008 has won the Inspirato Colorado Women’s Open twice and finished second four times.

Two new members of the DP World Tour – Colorado’s Davis Bryant and Dan Erickson – were still waiting word Wednesday on whether they could play in their first DP World Tour event.

This weekend’s tournament is the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa. Both players are currently on the bubble to participate.

Aurora’s Davis Bryant and Dan Erickson of Berthoud on Wednesday are on the outside looking in for the DP World Tour’s tournament this weekend, The Dunhill Championship in South Africa. The tournament begins Thursday.

The DP World Tour’s next stop is next week in the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius, and Bryant is scheduled to make the field there if he does not get into the field in South Africa.

Bryant and Erickson earned their cards for the DP World Tour through the Q-School competition in Europe that concluded last month.

Having a tour card gives players access to tournaments, but tournament fields are limited in size and new card members are often lower on the priority list and get passed over for the most lucrative tournaments.
