These new Scotty Cameron PVD-coated putters are the last word in sophistication
By Tony Dear
Reducing the sun’s glare probably wasn’t a top priority for golfers at the Open Championship last week. While players might have taken a degree or two off certain clubs to help keep the ball low or changed the make-up of their bag to give them another, or better, shot option, the reflective surfaces of their clubs wouldn’t have been a major consideration before doing battle with the windswept, rain-lashed links of Royal Troon.
The PGA Tour and, indeed, most sane golfers prefer to follow the sun, however, so minimizing sheen can be an important detail when ensuring your gear is everything it should be. The components in Scotty Cameron’s new B3 Triple Black Design LTD putters are all black – hence the name – the shaft, the Pistolini grip, and 303 Stainless Steel heads which have a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish that not only looks slick but also helps prevent bright flashes from distracting you. The putter’s topline is manually misted and the face and sole are hand-buffed before the PVD is applied.
All four models feature customizable sole weights and a dual-milled face – deep milling for softness, and mid-milling for feedback.
The design of the ever-popular Newport 2 is based on that of 2023’s Super Select Newport 2. As well as the familiar cavity dots, adjustable sole weights, and dual-milled face texture, the Newport 2 features an I-beam plumbing neck that is a popular feature of Scotty Cameron blades.
The Newport 2 Long-Neck features a neck-style Cameron introduced a quarter of a century ago. Almost face-balanced, it creates less toe hang making it ideal for a more straight back and straight-through stroke.
Another putter from Cameron’s distant past, the Catalina’s curved shoulders and slightly wider body are what distinguish it from the standard Newport while, unlike the Super Select Newport Plus, there is no 6061 Aluminum soleplate. A single-bend neck makes the Catalina almost face-balanced.

Lastly, the Santa Fe is another updated blast from the past and based on a Newport shape-head with a flare neck that offsets the head by about ¾ of a shaft.
Each putter has 3.5 degrees of loft and a lie angle of 70 degrees. The adjustable sole weights in the Newport 2, Newport 2 Long-Neck, and Santa Fe are tungsten and weigh 30 grams, 35 grams, or 40 grams, while the 10/15/20 gram weights in the Catalina and made of Stainless Steel. The weights are matched to the associated putter lengths of 33 inches, 34 inches and 35 inches.
As with all Scotty Cameron limited editions, the B3 Triple Black Putter doesn’t come cheap. But for Cameron aficionados and loyalists, price became immaterial long ago. This is about owning something truly special.
