Bucket List

Sunscreen is vital this summer and so is a bucket hat that keeps you in the shade while adding a significant screen for your face against the sun’s harmful UV rays

By Tony Dear

Amy Yang won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in Seattle at the weekend wearing a bucket hat.

The 34-year-old, sweet-swinging Korean has worn the standard baseball cap most of her career but lately has donned a bucket to protect her face and neck from the sun (and yes, even ‘Rain City’ gets plenty of sunshine during the summer). Thanks to the Netflix show ‘Full Swing’, Joel Dahmen is perhaps the best-known golfer wearing a bucket hat these days. The Washingtonian who beat cancer after being diagnosed in 2011 often wears a bucket with the word ‘Cancer’ crossed out.

Waterproof/resistant bucket hats can also be good in the rain, keeping your head and face dry and preventing drops from running down the back of your neck.
Here are three of our favorites …

Galvin Green Aqua Bucket Hat

The name suggests it’s best for use in the wet, but rain or shine this hat … er, shines. The fully seam-sealed headgear is 100% polyester with an ePTFE (Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane that makes it completely waterproof, breathable and windproof. The extra wide brim keeps you safe from the rain and sun and has a strap and elasticated sweatband for maximum protection and comfort. The waterproofing comes from Gore-Tex Paclite Technology giving the fabric over 1.4 billion microscopic pores (each 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule) per square centimeter.
