Two Seniors Qualify for U.S. Mid-Amateur at Colorado Golf Club

PARKER — Two players over 50 years old were among the five golfers who qualified Monday for the U.S. Mid-Amateur, a tournament limited to contestants 25 and older.

Robert Polk, a 56-year-old from Parker, and Mike Larson, the 50-year-old general manager of Boulder Country Club, earned spots in the national tournament along with Tristan Sanders of Denver, Paul Erdman of Erie and Danny Riskam of Broomfield. The U.S. Mid-Amateur will be played Sept. 17-22 in Richmond, Texas, near Houston.

On a day no one matched or bettered par in the 84-man Sectional Qualifying tournament at Colorado Golf Club, Sanders and Erdman shot 1-over-par 73s to share medalist honors, while Polk, Larson and Riskam carded 74s.

It will be the first U.S. Mid-Amateur for Sanders, Erdman and Polk, and the second for Larson and Riskam. Polk, Larson and Riskam survived a four-man playoff for the final three qualifying spots. Polk, playing at his home club, and Larson made routine pars on the first hole of sudden death to advance, while Riskam earned a national berth with a par on the third playoff hole.

Former Colorado State University golfer James Kurtenbach was the odd man out in the playoff after making a double bogey following a perfect drive on the third extra hole.
