TaylorMade’s New Copper Cuties

Now that’s just purty

By Tony Dear

The refined simplicity and sophisticated lines of muscle back irons and blades make them very attractive. A lot of persimmon-headed drivers were likewise wonderfully elegant. A few modern wedges give you pause, and there are some classically-shaped, high-end putters out there that stop you in your tracks. But has there ever been a more beautiful, more stunning, more seductive golf club than TaylorMade’s newly-released P790 Aged Copper Irons?
It helps that the original P790, with its Tour Satin finish, is an extremely fetching club, certainly. But the vintage copper finish just puts it over the edge. Rickie Fowler/Cobra’s KING RF Forged MB Copper irons were pretty tasty too, of course, but the P790s have a more antique, hoary look about them which does it for me.
TaylorMade says the design celebrates the company’s 1980s logo with an “aged copper finish designed to mature over time”, adding that “its distinctive copper styling, retro logos, and meticulously crafted components blend heritage with modern innovation”.

TaylorMade Vintage Copper P790

The current version of the P790 iron, the third in its seven-year history, was launched in August of last year. It features the familiar hollow-body/SpeedFoam combination and a high-strength 4140 forged steel face that is just 1.56mm at its thinnest location. Honey-combed cutouts linked across the internal back wall remove excess weight from above the strike zone and create a thick/thin back wall construction. Losing the weight there obviously allows TaylorMade to redistribute it to parts of the club that manipulate the position of the Center of Gravity (CG) – lower in the long irons, higher in the scoring clubs. The CG’s exact position is optimized in each club using Artificial Intelligence (AI). TaylorMade says it can “place every gram strategically to achieve specific performance goals”.
It’s a bundle of technologies that makes it one of the most popular irons in the game. The vintage copper finish makes it one of the most beautiful in golf’s history.

The glorious finish isn’t limited to the P790, though. The P770, Hi-Toe 3 Wedge, and recently-released BRNR Mini Driver also get the copper treatment.

We also wanted to bring your attention to a new product that was launched last November after four years in development. The Caddie Wheel was invented, and is made, in Canada and fixes easily to your push-cart with the addition of a bracket kit, turning it into an electric caddy that allows you to keep walking without having to shoulder your bag. The device can go as many as 45 holes on one charge, and the remote control allows you to set the speed that suits you best. The Caddie Wheel costs $549 and the bracket kit (designed for carts made by CaddyTek, Sun Mountain, ClicGear, Rovic, and Bag Boy) costs $70-$90 depending on which cart you have.
