When America sends its best, Coloradans are usually on the team.

This week begins a two-week stretch of international golf competitions – the Solheim Cup this week for the women, the Ryder Cup next week for the men. Coloradan’s feature prominently on both U.S. squads.

Westminster’s Jennifer Kupcho is up first. This is her second Solheim Cup and she is part of a U.S. team that is trying to prevent a European three-peat. The Euros won in 2021 when the competition was held at the Inverness Country Club in Toledo, Ohio, and in 2019 when it was at Gleaneagles in Scotland.

As a two-time Solheim Cup team member Kupcho has experience that is valuable in an overall young squad that this year consists of five rookies.

The U.S. leads 10 to 7 in the biannual competition, which was first played in 1990.

In an interview with Colorado AvidGolfer earlier this month Kupcho said the atmosphere at the Solheim Cups has to be experienced.

“(There are) so many more fans than we’re used to, it’s way louder,” Kupcho said. “I’d compare it to a football game. It’s so different compared to what we’re normally used to. The tension (is high) for sure. You get way more nervous because you’re representing your country. It’s such a different feeling than just representing yourself.

“As well as really just being ready for it. We’re friends out here with the Europeans on the day-to-day level on the LPGA, but it becomes a little bit cutthroat when you get over there.”

Then comes next week’s Ryder Cup, with U.S. rookie Wyndham Clark.

Clark, who grew up in Highlands Ranch, won more than $11 million on the PGA Tour this year, winning the U.S. Open and the Wells Fargo Championship.

The U.S. Ryder Cup team has not won on European soil since 1993. Clark is joined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, Max Homa, Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth, among others.

The Solheim Cup competition begins this Friday, Sept. 22, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 24. The Ryder Cup competition begins a week later, Friday Sept. 29, and finishes Sunday Oct. 1.
