Larry Thiel Sr., longtime Colorado golf leader, dies

Thiel ran the International golf tournament and was 1999 Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Person of the Year

Larry O. Thiel Sr. died Oct. 17 at the age of 81, his family announced in an email to the golf community this week.

“Throughout his distinguished career, Larry earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, peers, and business partners alike,” the family statement said. “His passion, dedication, and innovative spirit were evident in every project he undertook, and his influence continues to resonate across the industry. Larry’s contributions went beyond the professional sphere, as he was known for fostering genuine relationships, mentoring others, and always finding ways to elevate those around him.”

“My dad was more than a leader—he was a true pioneer who redefined what was possible in golf,” said his son Larry Thiel Jr. “He will be remembered not only for his achievements but for the positive impact he had on so many lives.”

He was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and worked as the tournament director for many golf events, including the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic in Florida, Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament in Ohio, the Skins Game, and for 21 the International Golf Tournament at Castle Pines in Colorado. Larry was named the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Person of the Year in 1999.

Larry is survived by the mother of his children, Freda, his daughter Laura, his son Larry Jr. – “Skip” and his wife Hailey, his two grandchildren Annabelle and “Trip”, along with many friends and colleagues who will carry on his legacy of excellence, integrity, and kindness.
