The University of Colorado lady golfers got an early look at their conference championship competition this week at the Bruin Wave Invitational. They teed it up alongside five Pac-12 rivals in San Luis Obispo, California, all of which are ranked in the top 50 in the country, per Golfstat.

At at 6,323 yards, the par-72 course at San Luis Obispo Country Club proved to be a challenging test for the 16-team field; the winning score was a 32-over-par 896 posted by the women from USC.

CU’s dynamic Australian duo of Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins set the pace for the Buffs early with a pair of 1-over-par 73s. But, their charges came to a grinding halt on their second loops when they carded a 9-over-par 81 and a 10-over-par 82 respectively.

Senior Brittany Fan (Pearl City, Hawaii) shot a solid 3-over-par 75 to open things up followed by a respectable 5-over-par 77 to end day one. She was T10 with one loop left and led the way for the Buffaloes going into the final round.

Senior Brittany Fan finished in a tie for 18th.

A bounce-back 77 for Choi on her closing 18 earned her a T21 spot on the individual leaderboard. Hodgkins played a balanced final round in which she made 15 pars, a birdie and two bogeys for a 73. This moved her up to T11. Fan got around the course in 78 strokes in her final round, and she landed in a tie for 18th. Neither Hodgkins nor Fan have finished outside the top-20 in any event during the season.

The group shot an aggregate 64-over-par 928 (304-315-309) to finish alone in sixth and 32 strokes behind the tournament champions USC. The final leaderboard should serve as a reminder to the Buffs that earning a spot in Regionals come April won’t come easy. Four of the top five finishers in the field were Pac-12 foes in No.10 USC, No. 1 UCLA, No. 4 Stanford and No. 18 Washington.

To prove how competitive the conference is, last year, all but two teams from the PAC-12—Utah and Washington State—qualified for Regionals, including the eventual champion, the University of Arizona.

UCLA’s Lilla Vu outlasted the field on the individual side. She posted a 3-round total of 1 under par and was the only player in red numbers. She won by two shots.

The team will be in competition again March 5-6 at the Meadow Club Women’s Collegiate in San Rafael, California.
