One of the more enjoyable parts of watching professional golf this year has been the continued re-emergence of Lydia Ko. The New Zealander’s rookie season on the LPGA Tour was back in 2014, so she’s been around a while now, and yet she is only 25! Those who keep tabs on these sort of things won’t be shocked by this, but I had to check it twice. I mean, I knew she was young and had started playing, indeed winning, on the LPGA at an incredibly early age…but 25!

Ko had won an astonishing 12 times before the middle of 2016 when she began going off the boil. It was a slump that lasted four and a half years, a period during which her loss of form was blamed on a number of things – swing coach David Leadbetter, her parents, a tendency to overanalyze (caused by Leadbetter or her parents?) and even a body-shaming episode during which she was accused on losing too much weight and becoming too skinny.

Over the last two years though she has righted the ship and played impressive golf, securing two wins and a total of 14 top-five finishes with nine tournaments still remaining this season.
This is the gear page so I won’t give you the entire Ko life-story, suffice to say it has been fun watching someone who drives it pretty ‘badly’ (just 254.64 yards – 88th on Tour, and 62.85% of fairways hit – 151st!) yet still averages 69.42 strokes a round thanks to stellar iron play, a superb short game and perhaps the Tour’s best putting stroke (1st in Putts per GIR – 1.73).

How does one segue from Ko’s improved golf to gear? Good question but perhaps, maybe, conceivably, possibly it has something to do with her footwear – a reach certainly but faintly plausible.
Ko, who recently got engaged to Chung Jun, youngest son of Hyundai Card Vice Chairman Ted Chung, has worn Ecco shoes since 2017 and recently contributed to the design of a special edition of the company’s new Biom G5 – the flagship shoe of Ecco’s Autumn/Winter 2022 Collection which includes new colorways and BOA-powered tightening dials in several existing men’s and women’s models.

The Biom G5 was modelled on the BIOM G3 and H4, is 100% waterproof and features the Natural Motion Technology that has become a hallmark of the Biom range, as well as FluidForm Technology which bonds the upper and outsole unit creating, says Ecco, a one-piece shoe without the use of glue or stitching. Leather uppers and a sporty mesh complete the look, and six Champ Zarma Tour cleats help you grip the ground and keep you upright.

Ko’s special edition Biom G5 will feature hibiscus flowers and silver ferns on either side of the shoe, honoring the countries in which she was born (South Korea) and grew up (New Zealand).
