We’re proud to call Colorado National a partner, as we host our first Tournament Series event of the season at the club. Now you can play the course with a cart through August 31st, 2018 for just $49, only with the Golf Passport!

The late, great course architect Jay Morrish holds Colorado National in his quiver of spectacular layouts. In Colorado, Morrish’s top designs include The Club at Ravenna (host of the 2018 Schomp BMW Cup) and Blackstone Country Club (which will play host to our second Tournament Series event – presented by Michelob Ultra – on August 20th). Nationally, Jay’s masterful work can be found at Troon North, La Cantera, The Boulders, TPC Scottsdale and abroad at Loch Lomond just to name a few. Trust us when we say Colorado National was forged by an all-time great and is in the care of some of the top course professionals in the game today.

Colorado National is, in layman’s terms, a monster— the championship layout measures nearly 7,700 yards and includes a 700-yard par-5. While it can be daunting form the tips, Colorado National holds five sets of tees for players of all lengths and abilities so choose wisely! The overarching play theme here? Hit it far for starters and leave yourself below the hole as tricky green complexes can lead to three putts. Oh, and make sure you know your yardages… elevation changes abound everywhere in Erie and it’ll take a test of your physical and metal game to master Colorado National.

Some quick tips on three of our favorite holes at Colorado National…

No. 7 – Par 5 – 576 yards

While it isn’t the longest par-5 on the course (there’s a 696-yard behemoth waiting for you at No. 15), the seventh is a gorgeous hole, with a water-encircled green. A straight away drive forces players to negotiate cross bunkers at 275-yards on the right and 300-yards on the left. There’s a small ridge right in the middle of this landing zone… pay attention to it. Let your ball fall to the right side of this mound to give yourself an extra distance boost, flat-lie and a clear shot at the green for your second, but it does bring rough into play. Our tip? Go for it here, since it’s one of two par-5’s on the course that you can actually use to score. Plus, the bunkers on the left and right side of the green aren’t terrible to play out of to get up-and-down for bird.

No. 17 – Par 4 – 364 yards

The ultimate risk/reward hole on the course, No. 17 is a test of your guile and gumption. A 280-yard carry across the water from the tips is enticing, especially if you’re down one with two to play in your match. If you’re successful, birdie or even eagle is well within grasp— but anything other than a perfectly struck drive will result in water, OB or sand with the first two options being far more prevalent. Want to play it safe? Take long iron down the hill for a flip wedge over the deep greenside bunker.

No. 18 – Par 4 – 452 yards

The six-handicap on the card for men, the home hole is one of the most picturesque on the course. From the top of the fairway 360-degree views of the course and clubhouse are framed by the Continental Divide in the deep background, so make sure to find the fairway for a reprieve before you finish the round. Aesthetics aside, the play here is driver down the middle-right of the fairway. Anything too far right will get eaten up by the fairway bunkering and too far left brings a ton of water into play on a lengthened second shot. Pin placement is key here with a two-tiered green sloping from back to front so make sure to find flat space on any approach.
