Carafiello Birdies Final Hole to Win HealthONE Colorado Women’s Open

Denver, CO— Second round leader Jessica Carafiello averted a disastrous finish by sinking a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for a one-stoke victory at the HealthONE Colorado Women’s Open at Green Valley Ranch. Carafiello of Coral Springs, FL chose the hardest hole on the course to birdie after losing five strokes to par on the previous three holes. Her bogie-double bogie-double bogie-birdie finish ended a tumultuous stretch which resulted in a 6-over par round of 78 and a three-day total of 221 (5-over par). Her one-stoke victory over Joy Trotter of Chino Hills, CA was worth $11,000 and is her biggest career victory to date. Her 54-hole total of 221 (5-over par) tied the record for highest winning score set in 2004 by champion Julie Tvede.

Carafiello’s success carried over to the pro-am competition as well as she and amateur partner Jay Small of Aurora, CO teamed up for first place by shooting 197 (19-under par) to win by four strokes over Cherry Hills CC assistant pro Kelly Gillum and Jeff Dorsey of Greenwood Village, CO (15-under par 201).

Somin Lee of Aurora, CO, bound for Pepperdine University in the fall, won low amateur honors by shooting 1-over par 73 for a three-day total of 226 (10-over par). She beat out Oklahoma Sooner Brooke Collins of Lousiville, CO by one stoke, overcoming Collins’ low round of the day (69, 3-under par).

Notables Cindy Figg-Currier and Charlotta Sorenstam finished 3rd and tied for 30th respectively. World #3 ranked golfer Martin Kaymer of Germany again caddied for fiancée Allison Micheletti who finished alone in 42nd place.
