We’ve frequently referred to the fact that most modern clubmaker’s have to tweak technologies and design in order to create clubs for very specific segments of the market who want to hit very specific types of shot. PXG does it as well as anyone.

PXG’s 0317 Series, named for the Marines’ Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) number for a scout sniper, is designed for better players.

But is the new 0317 T designed for the better player who wants more speed, a little extra long-game spin, greater control and workability, better feel, a higher Moment of Inertia (MoI), a more compact appearance, additional customization, a higher or lower launch angle?
PXG launched the solid-bodied 0317 ST muscle back in September of last year for players who hit the ball so sweetly time after time all they’re really looking for is a club to help them work the ball better. In April  the 0317 CB joined the ranks.

A solid-bodied cavity back, it is  similarly compact with a similarly thin top-line and minimal offset, but its perimeter-weighted head makes it a little more forgiving.

Now the 0317 T arrives with a hollow-body filled with PXG’s proprietary S COR material that, thanks to slightly less elasticity than its predecessor – X COR2 –  makes it not quite as fast and a little more stable. The face doesn’t flex quit so much and launches the ball on a slightly lower trajectory but with higher spin. That makes it possible for better players to hit their piercing iron shots but hit controlled fades and draws a little more easily.
An internal, 15-gram tungsten weight near the toe gives the 0317 T balances with the extra weight of the heel/hosel area to stabilize the clubhead and locate the center of gravity directly in the center of the clubface. This means any slightly off-center strike shouldn’t feel all that different to a center-strike and those center-strikes really will feel like hitting the sweet spot.
The 0317 T is triple-forged from 8620 carbon steel which, PXG says, creates a “tight crystalline grain structure that delivers a pure resonance and extremely solid feel at impact.” The body is also CNC Milled to ensure very tight tolerances, and robotic polishing gives them a flawless finish.
PXG’s Precision Weighting Technology places a large tungsten weight on the back of the clubhead to customize the weight of the head. The adjustable weight (the optimal weight for each golfer is identified during the fitting process) is located on the center of gravit so no matter which weight a golfer chooses, the center remains in the same position and the club’s performance is unaffected.
Bobby Shoemaker, a master-fitter at the PXG fitting studio and store in Centennial, says he is making a lot of appointments to fit customers into the new 0317 T.

“I think a club like this might have seemed quite intimidating to 10-15 handicappers a few years ago,” he said. “But its MoI is 14 percent higher than that of the 0317 ST. And it’s actually 11 percent higher MoI than the 0317 CB because of its slightly larger profile.”
Shoemaker says the performance characteristic he’s been most impressed with is distance control. “When people think about shot dispersion, they tend to think of left and right,” he says. “But this club’s extremely tight tolerances together with the S COR material will help you tighten your dispersion from front to back too.”
