Are the days of the 300-yard hole-in-one upon us?
This summer, at least, it sure seemed that way.
Twice in the span of a week two players at two Denver area courses got holes in one on par 4s that were each a little over 300 yards.
In one case, a player who had not warmed up properly took a few practice swings then hit a hole-in-one on the famous No. 1 hole at Cherry Hills Country Club.
The player, who spoke via email with Colorado AvidGolfer, said he did not want to be named for this article but is proud of his accomplishment.

“That is the first time in history of our club that hole has been aced,” said Bryan Nicholson, the head pro at Cherry Hills. “Ironically that was (the player’s) first swing of the day. He didn’t even see it go in the hole; he thought he pulled it. It hit the bottom of the flagstick and dropped.”
The hole plays around 340 yards from the members tees.
Maybe it was in the air, because around the corner from Cherry Hills Country Club the same feat took place a few days later. On May 8 Charles Metz used a driver to get a hole-in-one on the 305-yard No. 8.
That green is frequently driven, but the Donald Ross designed green has a lot of subtle contour which makes a hole-in-one from that distance a near miracle.
For a city of Denver course, it was the first 300-yard hole-in-one since 2023, when No. 17 at Evergreen Golf Course yielded two.
Of course, this region is known for long holes-in-one. In 2002 Mike Crean scored a hole-in-one on the 517-yard par 5 No. 9 hole at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver, which holds the record as the longest hole-in-one ever recorded.
As the game’s technology has evolved more players are capable of driving the ball 300 yards and more, so the likelihood that the era of the 300-yard hole-in-one is here to stay.
