The Full SP

Callaway’s new Full Toe SP combines a full (or high) toe with full-face grooves and Spin Pocket to help you hit a range of full and delicate wedge shots

The full/high-toe lob wedge first saw the light of day in the mid-1980s when Ping released its Eye2 L-Wedge. The Eye2s were the biggest-selling irons in history, and while a handful of players continued using them and the L-Wedge right through 2010, when they finally became non-conforming because of their square grooves, they had really disappeared from the PGA Tour long before that, taking the high-toe wedge with them.

Then Phil Mickelson showed up at the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla with two Mack Daddy wedges and a high-toe Ping Eye2 XG lob wedge, which his masters at Callaway weren’t terribly pleased about.

Roger Cleveland, Callaway’s wedge designer at the time, ordered two Mack Daddy heads cut and welded together (Frankenstein wedge) to produce the high-toe look Mickelson liked, mainly becauseit let him open the face and swing hard with short, greenside shots, especially from the rough.

Despite its rather awkward look and specialist nature, Callaway bought it to retail in 2015 as the Mack Daddy PM Grind, with full-face grooves as well as the high toe.  Other manufacturers followed with their own Full/High-toe designs with full-face grooves, and though plenty of golfers were still put off by the look, they have attracted a fair-sized audience.

What the Mack Daddy PM Grind wedges lacked, though, was the Spin Pocket that Callaway introduced in the Opus SP this time last year (the Opus SP+ came in early 2026). A hollow chamber low in the head, the Spin Pocket removed mass from the sole area, shifting the Center of Gravity higher. A higher CG lowers launch but increases spin, especially on 54°–60° clubs, which makes them significantly easier to control on fuller shots while also making them good for short shots where you open the face and send the ball high.

Callaway’s new Full Toe SP wedges have the Spin Pocket – obviously, that’s what the ‘SP’ stands for. Indeed, it’s the largest Spin Pocket they’ve ever made – 18% larger than that in the OpusSP+.

And the Spin Gen 2.0 grooves extend from heel to toe, giving the Full Toe SP 44% more groove area than a traditional wedge. Plus, there are more groove edges to interact with the ball and create more spin.

So, with the face square, you can play a low-ish but full-ish shot that spins to a halt quickly, and you can open the face to hit a high, soft-landing flop shot.
There are two grinds: the J Grind, which has lower effective bounce, aggressive heel relief, and more curve from heel to toe. The extra curve helps the clubhead move through the turf without losing much speed.

The JW Grind, meanwhile, has a wider/higher bounce and is meant for those who struggle in bunkers, helping them to minimize digging.
