First-ever U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach kicks off
by Jim Bebbington
The U.S. Women’s Open started Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links, and two Colorado golfers need strong rounds Friday to make the cut.

Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster shot 4-over par on Thursday in cool conditions and was tied in 81st place going into Friday’s round. Kupcho’s best finish this season so far is a 2nd place finish at the Mizuho Americas Open in early June, and she is seeking a strong year in part to qualify for this fall’s Solheim Cup team. Kupcho tees off Friday’s round at 9:39 a.m.
Jill McGill, who was born in Denver and played recently at the Inspirato Colorado Women’s Open, opened her U.S. Women’s Open tournament with a round of 7-over par and is tied at 121st place. McGill earned the right to play in the Open by winning last year’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open.
Friday opened with American Bailey Tardy leading at 5-under par.
It is the first time the U.S. Women’s Open has been played at Pebble Beach.
