Colorado Getaways June 2019: Steamboat Springs

Steamboat hiking trails

Springs In Your Step

From stylish hotel rooms and studios to four-bedroom villas, Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas serves as the ideal base for exploring one of Colorado’s prettiest regions. Trails of varying difficulty abound. At one extreme is Fish Creek Falls, a 7.6- mile hike straight from town, that rewards you with views of 280-foot waterfalls along the way. Other trails include Spring Creek, Emerald Mountain, Howelsen Hill and Thunderhead, which climbs nearly four miles to the top of the Steamboat Ski Resort gondola. For $15, you can also ride the gondola to the 9,100-foot-high outdoor deck of Thunderhead Lodge, home of the Sunset Happy Hour. You can also stroll downtown and visit the six-acre public garden at Yampa River Botanic Park.

Range Brews

If you miss the Reds Whites & Brews In The Boat festival on June 22, head to Steamboat’s stellar Butcherknife Brewing or just wait for Steamboat Oktoberwest (Sept. 13-14), featuring 40 craft brewers, a brisket cookoff, live music and local food.

Tour de Steamboat

Taking place July 20, the legendary non-competitive cycling event offers four different route distances—26, 46, 66 or 116 miles—for riders of all ages and abilities. Go at your own pace, take advantage of the superb support and enjoy the scenery and history of northwest Colorado. New for 2019 is the 100-mile backroad Gravel Gruel.

Like The Rollingstone

The Sheraton Steamboat’s spectacular Robert Trent Jones Jr. course at Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club treats you to incredible views of the Yampa Valley and Flat Tops Wilderness. Lakes, creeks and slick greens appear throughout, as pines and aspens frame every fairway.

Yampa Valley Crane Festival: Known for fly-fishing, the Yampa River is also an annual stopover for migrating sandhill cranes. Celebrate Aug. 29-Sept. 1 with speakers, films, photo contests, barbecues and more.

Hot Air Balloon Rodeo

It’s Gonna Be Hues

Colorful Colorado’s two most colorful days may just be July 13-14 in Steamboat Springs, where the 38th annual Hot Air Balloon Rodeo and 45th annual Art in the Park coincide. The Rodeo paints the skies above Bald Eagle Lake, while in Lincoln Park, vibrant arts, crafts and performances await. On Saturday night, tether yourself to the highly Instagrammable Balloon Glow on Mt. Werner.

Make Hay at Haymaker

Steamboat’s Auld Sod: One of the state’s top public courses, Haymaker’s Keith Foster design stretches 7,308 yards—all evoking the linksland of the British Isles.

As Green as It Gets

Audubon International has designated Haymaker a “Signature Sanctuary”—one of only two Colorado courses to receive the organization’s highest distinction.

Hit the 19th Hole

The open-plan grill extends onto a veranda with a fireplace and patio adjacent to a lawn to play cornhole and bocce as the sun gloriously sets behind the mountains.
