Upside Down?

Golf Pride’s new Reverse Taper putter grip just won’t look or feel right to some. For others, though, it could change the way they feel about putting

We are always interested when an established manufacturer comes out with something that seems, well, odd. Anything in golf equipment that defies commonly-held wisdom, at least common convention, is probably worth taking a look at if the company making the principle-defying claims has been in the business for 75 years, and is far and away the most successful producer in its category.

It’s important to note, however, that grip-maker Golf Pride isn’t putting all its eggs in one basket with this new tech. No sensible company does that, of course, because what shaves strokes from your handicap might add them to mine, and what feels comfortable to me might make you grimace. For sure, this new Reverse Taper technology won’t work for everyone, but it might look right to some the moment they first see it. Those golfers probably won’t be able to get to a putting green quickly enough.

Golf Pride, based in Pinehurst, N.C., and a division of power-management multinational, Eaton, will have nine putter grips in its inventory when the Reverse Taper becomes available at retail on April 15th. Constructed using polyurethane to deliver what Golf Pride calls the “right texture and weight with a feel that is soft, yet responsive,” the Reverse Taper grip has a comparatively slim upper half and a wider lower section which is designed to stabilize the top hand and reduce tension in the bottom hand. The goal is to help you accelerate the putterhead smoothly through impact and improve your consistency by eliminating over-use of the right hand (flipping).

The Reverse taper is available in three styles – Pistol, Flat and Round, and two sizes. It is only the second Golf Pride grip to be conceived, designed and tested at the Pinehurst HQ where the company moved to in 2019. “We observed a trend where other manufacturers were designing grips that tried to remove the influence of the hands from putting,” says James Ledford, Golf Pride’s President. “But our research indicated that by optimizing the connection between the hands and grip players can improve their performance.”
