Tolan overcomes 5 shot deficit to win his second Colorado Open

Denver, CO: Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch, CO started the final round five strokes back in a tie for third place and fired a 6-under par 65 to overtake third round leader Zahkai Brown of Arvada, CO and win his second HealthONE Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.
Tolan and Brown were tied after the 16th hole but Tolan, playing in the group ahead of Brown, made his sixth birdie of the day on the difficult par-5 18th to take a two-stroke lead at 14-under after Brown three-putted the par-3 17th for bogie. Brown needed to eagle the last hole to force a playoff, but his eagle chip came up 8 feet short and his birdie left him one stroke shy of his first professional win. Brown finished even par for the day and 13-under (271) for the tournament.

Tolan, who also won the championship in 2009, collected $23,000 for the victory and exemptions into the Canadian Tour Waterway Classic in September and next week’s Texas State Open. Brown pocketed $13,500 for his biggest payday after turning professional just two months ago.

James Drew of Las Vegas and Dustin Pimm of Sandy, UT finished tied for third at 11-under 273 and received $7,230 each. Low amateur honors went to University of Northern Colorado sophomore-to-be Steven Kupcho of Westminster, CO who finished tied for 18th at 6-under (278). The top 30 plus ties earned exemptions into the 2013 Colorado Open.
