The MG5 is the first of TaylorMade’s Milled Grind wedges to be fully forged

By Tony Dear

It seems the wedge gods are trying to tell us something. Last week, we featured Callaway’s new Opus SP club and, a few days later, came news that Mizuno would be offering its Pro T-1 and T-3 wedges in two new finishes (Black Ion and Denim Copper) and TaylorMade had introduced the MG5.

Big wedge news that doesn’t include Vokey or Cleveland seems a little strange. Still, Callaway’s Opus SP was worthy of attention thanks to its innovative design, and the Greg Cesario-designed MG5 likewise deserves star-billing because of its news-worthy mix of tech features. Cesario might be a new name to some readers. Regardless, he’s an industry veteran having been with Acushnet from 1995 to 2009 and, for the last 16 years, TaylorMade, where he managed the Kingdom Fitting facility for a couple of years before becoming a Staff Manager and working with the company’s high-profile players.

The Milled Grind Wedge first appeared in 2017 when the perfectly-replicable milled sole attracted the lion’s share of attention. The emphasis on future models seemed to be on spin-generation with laser-etching and sharper grooves being added to a very busy-looking face in 2019, together with a TPU vibration-dampening insert. The sleeker, more sophisticated-looking 2021 club featured raised micro-ribs, and the similarly smooth-looking MG4 introduced Spin Tread: laser-etched, 45-degree slanted mini-grooves between the main grooves to remove moisture in wet conditions and help retain spin.

The evolution continues with the Milled Grind’s first-ever forged design. Created from a billet of soft carbon steel, the MG5 has retained the elegant, better-players’ look as well as Spin Tread between what TaylorMade is calling “Saw-Milled Grooves” – grooves that are sharper and more tightlypacked than on previous clubs. The fully-forged (whole clubhead) feel is the real story this time, though.

Five main grinds are available, but a special sixth is also available at extra cost.

TaylorMade MG5
Standard Camber (SC) – “Built for ultimate greenside versatility and designed with heel and toe relief for manipulating the face in a variety of turf conditions.”
Standard Bounce (SB) “Four-way camber design suits an array of swing styles and turf conditions,”
Standard Extreme (SX) – “Reverse ‘C’ trailing edge helps keep the bounce consistent.” A wide sole is good for soft sand and lush/moist turf.
High Bounce (HB) – High-bounce (12 to 14 degrees) for steep swing and soft conditions. Heel relief facilitates opening the face.
Low Bounce (LB) – Eight degrees of bounce make this ideal for those with a shallow swing and firm turf.
Tiger Woods (TW) Grind – Updated leading edge (Woods’s new preference), and increased bounce in the heel (56-degree club has 12 degrees of bounce, 60-degree club has 11 degrees).

$200 ($220 TW Grind)
Lofts – 46˚ – 60˚  (21 different loft/bounce configurations available)
