The new Titleist iron release was expected certainly, but when clubs this good-looking appear it’s always an eye-opener

by Tony Dear

Titleist’s vaunted T-Series irons first appeared 2019, and were renewed in 2021. So it doesn’t take a wizard or clairvoyant to predict the Fairhaven, MA would be updating the line sometime in 2023. Indeed, the beautiful new irons debuted on the PGA Tour at the Memorial Tournament in June and will be available for fittings from today and at retail on August 25th. And, while there are one or two minor surprises, the handsome quartet of irons – T100, T150, T200 and T350 (and also the T200 Utility irons and U•505) – is every bit as appealing as expected.

There is every reason to expect the new T100 will take over as the PGA Tour’s most-played iron from its predecessor. Labelled the ‘Modern Tour Iron’, the T100 is fully-forged with a dual-cavity, milled face, D18 tungsten weights, an improved variable-bounce sole whose shape and softened trailing edge were designed in conjunction with Bob Vokey, and a relocated, more precise Center of Gravity (CG). The club is engineered to feel more solid, sound better, move through the turf better, and enable better golfers to play with still greater precision. There is a modicum of offset and the dual cavity and tungsten weights incorporated into the clubhead using a 2000º aerospace brazing process to eliminate weld points, certainly add some forgiveness, but the T100 looks every inch the better-player’s club – probably five handicap and below.

In 2021, the T100 was accompanied by the T100s which was much the same club but with stronger lofts. There is no T100s this time but there is a T150 which is also a fully-forged iron but with some minor adjustments to make it a little faster and, therefore, longer. The refined muscle channel which sits slightly closer to the face, slightly larger clubhead, precisely-positioned tungsten weights, and stronger lofts result in a club that seeks to add a little more distance to the better player’s iron game.

Titleist describes the T200 as a ‘do everything iron for the golfer who wants the best in distance and forgiveness plus enhanced look and feel’. That sounds like an appealing package and is created with a re-engineered chassis whose structure has been stiffened. That creates a more solid feel while improved Max Impact Technology, a polymer core that sits behind the face and which has been a feature of this club since 2019, provides better feel by way of vibration-dampening. While there’s about as little offset as there is on the T100, the sole and top-line are noticeably thicker which makes the T200 just that little bit more appealing to mid-handicappers.

The T200 Utility-Build (2, 3, 4-iron) have very little offset and can be paired with a selection of high-performing hybrid graphite shafts – including premium options from Graphite Design.

At the game-improver (or rather ‘Player Improvement’) end of the performance scale, we find the T350 which is a forged, hollow-body designed to launch the ball easily for golfers with slower swingspeeds. The Max Impact Technology and dual-taper forged face create great feel with consistently high ball-speeds across the entire face. The T350 is a refined-looked Player Improvement club that wouldn’t look out of place in the bag of some of your club’s better players, but the internal tech, thicker top line and wider sole will accommodate less than Tour-level ballstriking.

The release also includes the new U•505 which features a shallower face and, consequently, the lower CG you want in a utility iron. The single-taper forged face and shorter blade length help to improve your shot dispersion, and the new version is a better-looking club with better feel than its predecessor.
